‘Hallyu’ Hits the Philippines

‘Hallyu’ Hits the Philippines

Seeing your family members religiously tuning in to Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, Goblin, Legend of the Blue Sea or any other Korean drama is not that surprising since almost everyone, especially millennials are going gaga over Koreans, be it actors, actresses, and especially celebrities whom they refer to as idols in South Korea. However, have you ever wondered how and when Hallyu, which simply means the Korean cultural wave, started in the Philippines?

Before we got into the point of finger heart (yes, it’s called the finger heart, not the “oppa sign”) almost making the peace sign seem old and clichéd in our ways of posing for a selfie, Korean dramas pioneered the Korean culture into popularity since GMA aired the first drama titled Bright Girl in Philippine television on 2003. On the following years, ABS-CBN eventually followed suit by airing Lovers in Paris and Only You while GMA successfully aired Full House, Stairway to Heaven and Jewel in the Palace.

The Korean cultural wave, while still on a blazing trail of success left behind by the Korean dramas that were fervently welcomed by the Filipinos, a Korean girl group named Wonder Girls made every Filipino sing along to their smash hit Nobody on 2008. The Philippines, while still trying to get Korean Pop Music—KPop for short—out of everybody’s heads, Sorry, Sorry was released by a 13-member Korean boy group called Super Junior that made everybody seem apologetic as they mumbled the lyrics. After a couple of months, 2NE1, a Korean girl group in which a former ABS-CBN talent, Sandara Park was a member of, debuted with their smash hit Fire that got everybody feeling lit on 2009. These feats began piling up as KPop groups released hits after hits on the following years namely, Fantastic Baby by Bigbang, The Boys by Girls’ Generation, Growl by EXO and many more as the Hallyu wave continues to hit not only the Philippines but also the world.
