CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR
By: Flownie Nunez
The culture of the Philippines is a combination of culturesof the East and West. The Philippines was first settled by Negritos; today, although few in numbers, they preserve a very traditional way of life and culture. First example of the Filipino traditions or culture is Christmas Day. Christmas is one of the most loved celebrations by Filipinos. Families and relatives gather on the 24th of December, to celebrate food prepared for "Noche Buena," a Spanish term which means "midnight meal" to greet Christmas Day. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus Christ we don’t have to celebrate this season. He is the real spirit of Christmas so that we need to cherish and treasure this moment.
The other one is New Year, On December 31 (Bisperas ng Bagong Taón), Filipino families gather for the Media Noche a lavish midnight feast that supposedly symbolises their hopes for prosperity in the coming year, and lasts until the following morning as with the Noche Buena taken on Christmas Eve. This is also like Christmas Eve. Families and relatives gathered and celebrate another year for the whole family. These two are special season for Filipino people. Because this is the special time where family bond and get to together.
